SUMMARY:I decided to travel to Homer, Alaska a day early since I had to check in for my Cessna 206 plane trip to see the bears in Katmai National Park and Preserve. I had to get weighed, check in, and be ready for an early departure the next morning. Homer is a very special place to stay. I wish I had more time to walk the 4-5 mile jutting piece of fjord! Just awesome! I got to eat haddock and fries at the Boardwalk Fish and Chips place. I walked into the Salty Dawg saloon but since I don’t drink, it was just a treat to be there! Kenai is a neat small town; I stopped in the Visitor Center, but it seemed like many places were starting to close down for the season! I spent some time walking along the Cook Inlet, and took photos of the Chapel of St. Nicholas, dating back to 1906. These older churches are Russian Orthodox. I saw the original settler home of Oskolkof.Dolchok House dated 1918, but it was closed also. I stopped at the Kenai River Estuary, but no birds were out at that time of morning, nor moose! In Ninilchik I visited the famous Russian Orthodox Church. I wanted to check out the lighthouse, but the construction on the beach was overwhelming, the ground was dirt and washboard, so I had to abort that mission! The rest of the drive was awesome to Homer, Alaska, the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World! The Heritage RV Park on the Homer Spit was like no other. What a phenomenal slice of heaven. I am so happy to have been able to stay in Homer. The spit with all its special stores, the water, mountains, clouds are truly a glimpse of heaven!
