SUMMARY:I drove this morning, constantly staying ahead of the severe wind storm and rain. The mountains and river in Chickaloon and Sutton were awesome. In Sutton I noticed a partial rainbow against the darker blue skies, and then, looking in my rear view window, I noticed a full rainbow. So, I stopped and got the rainbow completely over my RV! That was so cool! I saw the Matanuska Glacier and got great photos. I drove past the Dall Sheep Mountain area, but, alas, no sight of Dall sheep! They apparently get calcium by eating gypsum, a form of calcium sulfate. There seemed to be many gypsum work places in this area. The fireweed was awestruck here against the lavenders in the mountains. The fall colors are really striking their true colors and provided amazing contrast with the snow on the mountain tops and the glaciers. I finally checked into the Grand View Café and RV Park, ready for a promised home-cooked meal. Well, the café was going to be closed today and tomorrow. The owners just left all of us RV’ers without any services while they went to the state fair! The storm finally caught up with me here in Glacier View, and the electricity went out 4 times before 10:00 pm. All in a day’s traveling. But I would strongly recommend NOT going to Alaska during August. It is much better to be there the last week in June and anytime during the month of July. August is too unpredictable when it comes to when the owners are going to close their businesses in preparation for mostly going back to live in the United States!
