I had heard there were more construction zones on this next stretch, so I decided to leave super early to avoid waiting in line. I thought maybe I could get ahead of the pilot-pickup drill! The sunrise was spectacular! But then the construction zones were definitely there. I drove by rest-type areas where RV’s and trucks stayed overnight! They decided to stay overnight and try again the next morning. The stretches of gravel roads mixed in with half asphalt with intolerable transitions between the two were jaw dropping, heart attack provoking, and vertebrae jarring!!! A moment of respite occurred when I stopped at the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge. What a beautiful log cabin settlement with grass growing on the rooftops. This is where the sandhill cranes and other birds seek refuge on their way from Siberia and north of Alaska. Without this type of preserve, they would not be able to survive the long trek south. We really must protect these wildlife areas. 50% of birds are now on the going-extinct lists! I stopped at the Yukon/Alaska border and took photos of the international boundary. Met a father/son duo who really wanted to know more about my Pleasure-Way Plateau TS. Wonderful people from Montana headed for fishing in Stewart, Alaska with friends. Finally got to Tok, Alaska for a two-night breather at the Sourdough RV Park. I was so hungry I ordered a Salmon Burger and homemade potato fries. THE BEST!
